Hello Mr Laaz, you want to train to be a freight forwarding specialist. What is your motivation for doing this?
SL: Some people think that a freight forwarder is only about loading and unloading trucks. But every day I feel at close quarters how much more the services we provide here are additionally needed for direct transport – the estimation of risks, load safety, customs declaration, the optimisation of journeys by reading off cards and many, many other things.
How does that match up with your training? How do you learn practical things here?
SL: I often sit behind my boss and take a look at how he works. As he’s the kind of person who’s always looking for ways of improving things, it’s always terrifically exciting and we work really well together.
Are you not exaggerating a bit there?
SL: Not at all. One thing happens after the other here and we have a working atmosphere where trust and a relaxed tone are the top priority. In what other company would a trainee be loaned the company car when it’s necessary?
How about working independently instead of looking how things work?
SL: Did I say that I just spend the whole time behind my boss? That’s not true. From the very start here in Hanau in February I’ve been responsible for a warehousing project. In the meanwhile, around 500 palettes have been stored for various storage customers and these are managed at the press of a button – and the whole thing has been done with a warehousing program that we’ve developed ourselves!
How did your friends react when you told them that you had started at a freight forwarder?
SL: Many people confuse the qualification of a freight forwarding specialist with an office clerk and thought that it was fairly boring. Now a pal of mine has asked if he, too, could start this apprenticeship. He must have found out what you do in it and how much fun it can be.
You have now been able to take a look everywhere. Have you had any surprises?
SL: More than one: It was clear that I could get a driving licence for a forklift truck. But that such priority would be put on training here, and that I could attend a course on ‚Stress-free etiquette / Good manners‘ was something that I’d never believed would be possible before. Here you really learn things for life in general. That’s also true for the ‚Better telephoning‘ course.
What kind of career would you want in the future?
SL: Well, I think I’ve got what it takes to be a good dispatcher. I feel challenged here but not exploited. It would be super if I could be taken on.
Then, lots of luck!
